Phakisa International Raceway – Welkom, South Africa

KV3, as a member of a multi-disciplinary consortium, was responsible for the general layout, track design, services, electrical and mechanical engineering aspects of the project. The combination of a Grand Prix motorcycle racetrack and an oval racetrack make this raceway a unique design and the only one of its kind in the world. It was constructed at a cost of US$12.7 million.

Specification/Design:

• 4.24km motorcycle track conforms to international standards for motor racing circuits, including a shorter 3.01km track.
• D-shaped oval track measuring 2.5km conforms to standards for INDYCAR/NASCAR racing. It is one of only four tri-oval tracks outside the USA and is the first in Africa.

Commendation by the South African Institute of Civil Engineers for Technical Excellence as one of the year’s outstanding Civil Engineering achievements in South Africa.
